KeyChron is well-known for being one of the few companies that create keyboards with function keys specifically for macOS devices, without excluding Windows and mobile users. You just need to replace the included keycaps with those specific to your device to customize the keyboard based on your usage. In this article, we will explore all aspects of the Keychron K2 Pro mechanical keyboard, examining its strengths and weaknesses.
HotSwap Keyboard
One of the main features of HotSwap keyboards is the ability to physically change the switches. This provides a significant advantage over traditional keyboards for several reasons. If one of the switches is defective or damaged, with a non-HotSwap keyboard, you would be forced to send it in for repair or replace it entirely, as the switches are soldered to the board. However, with a HotSwap keyboard, you can easily remove the defective switch using the included tool and replace it with a new one. This process does not require any special expertise and is as simple as replacing the keycaps.
Another significant advantage of HotSwap keyboards is the ability to customize the switches to your liking. You can decide which types of switches to use in different parts of the keyboard to optimize your user experience. For example, you might choose to use Blue switches in the numeric keypad for a “clicky” and satisfying typing experience, while opting for Red switches in the letter keys for smooth and quiet typing. This flexibility allows you to tailor the keyboard to your personal preferences and the type of work or gaming you do.
Bluetooth Keyboard
The advantage of having a Bluetooth keyboard is big. Not having cables connected allows you to maintain a minimalist setup and use the keyboard at a distance from the computer (up to 10 meters), making usage easier and improving the overall experience. The only downside might be button latency for competitive gamers, but this can be resolved by connecting the USB cable during gaming sessions. When you connect the cable, remember to use the switch on the left side of the keyboard to switch from BT (Bluetooth) to Cable mode.
However, keep in mind that if you are not a competitive gamer, you won’t notice any latency. Personally, I have never experienced delays or connection losses. I tested it on a MacBook without any issues. If you are using a desktop PC, make sure you have a Bluetooth receiver of at least version 5.1 (the same as the Keychron K2 Pro).
Battery Life
Regarding battery life, it is quite impressive: the company claims around 70 hours of use with the LEDs on. If you use it intensively, you can charge it every 2-3 days, while if you use it for only a few hours a day, once a week is sufficient. Additionally, if you are not interested in the LEDs, you can turn them off by pressing F5 multiple times, which will further increase the battery life.
How To Check Keychron K2 Pro Battery?
To check your battery level, simply use the combination FN + F2 + B. The numbers on the keyboard will light up based on the battery percentage. For example, if the numbers 1 through 8 light up, your battery is at approximately 80%.
Switches and Keycaps of the Keychron K2 Pro
In my opinion, the switches on this keyboard are among the best available. This is because they come pre-lubricated from the factory, which significantly enhances the user experience compared to non-lubricated switches. The keys produce a more pleasant sound and, in addition, typing becomes smoother and more satisfying.
Only the Red and Brown switches are factory-lubricated, while the Blue switches, being clicky, are not suitable for this process as lubrication does not bring significant improvements. If you have used non-lubricated Red or Brown switches in the past, you will definitely notice the difference and be pleased.
Regarding the LEDs, the RGB version offers many options and effects, in line with other products in the same range. The only downside is that the keys do not have transparent characters, which means the LED light does not shine through them. During nighttime sessions, this might be annoying, as depending on the room’s lighting conditions, you might have difficulty reading the characters. However, this situation is rare since the brightness of the LEDs is high enough to illuminate the entire keyboard. Although this is a limitation, it does not significantly affect the keyboard’s usability.
